Zone 4 Swimmers who are recognized by CSI as having disabilities may enter the WSL Championship meet without making the q-time. These swimmers may also swim in the age group, which would be more appropriate. All disabled athlete entries will be done under the coach's guidance. The entry chair may assist the coach in determining an appropriate age group/event/heat. Any special awards (participation) given to the disabled athlete will be the responsibility of the athlete's team.

Join Craig Sea Sharks & Olympic Medalist At Mexican Buffet July 10th, 2010 Details of Event.

This year the Western Slope League begins a program where we bring a former Olympian to one of our summer meets to mingle with the swimmers and their families. Our goal is to have a meet like this each summer, and to rotate the site. On July 9-11, at the Craig meet, Kristy Kowal (2000 Olympic silver medalist, dual 1998 World Championships gold medalist) will be there. Below is a brief biography of Kristy.

Kristina ("Kristy") Kowal won the silver medal in the 200 m breaststroke at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney.

Kowal helped her college, the University of Georgia (UGA), to three NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships. In 2000, she was named NCAA Woman of the Year and she was recipient of the Today's Top VIII Award as a member of the Class of 2001, which honors eight senior student-athletes each year. She graduated from UGA in 2002 with a Bachelor of Science in Education (B.S.Ed). She was a 1996 graduate of Wilson High School, in West Lawn, PA. Kowal began swimming primarily to be with her friends. She was never very fast as a young child and was on the "C" team for years.

Kowal became a member of the United States Swimming Team in 1995. She is now an elementary teacher at her alma-mater, Wilson School District, in West Lawn, Pennsylvania.(

The next WSL meeting will be held on Saturday, May 1 in Delta at 2:00pm. Because of the high cost of conference calls, calling into the meeting will not be an option.

Delta will again host a Short and Sweet Meet on May 1st. They have invited Coach Matt Beck to conduct the 4th Annual Spring Clinic focusing on Butterfly. The clinic will follow the meet. Matt Beck's bio is attached.

Please note that the meet dates for the Sopris meet have been changed to May 15-16th. The Montrose Meet has been also been moved one week back to July 16-18th.

Montrose would like to reserve the right to revise the meeting time the Wednesday before their meet once the timelines are worked out. WSL League will be voting for officers on Saturday of the WS Championships. For the election of the V.P and Secretary, each team has 3 votes. One athlete, one coach and one non-athlete or heir representatives. For all other issues each team has one vote.

Candidates-For V.P:Amanda Hatch, Delta and John Gadbois, Durango. Secretary - Bonnie Hulstine, Craig, Brooks Bryant, Aspen,Dee James, Ouray. Nominations will be taken from the floor. For more and up to date information check the WSL website.

Grand Junction Dolphins will be offering time trials after each afternoon session at this weekend's Western Slope Championships. Entries will be $5 and they need to be within a State time by .50 per 50m to enter.

The WSL meeting will immediately follow the Saturday afternoon session of the WSL meet. Location TBD, but likely the picnic shelter east of the pool. All teams should come prepared to bring tentative dates for meets next year. Each team has 3 votes for the upcoming election. One athlete rep., one coach and non-athlete member. For all other issues voted on only one vote per team.

The East Pavilion at Lincoln Park has been reserved for Saturday evening following the afternoon session for a multi-team cook-out! Each family should bring something to grill and a dish to share. The Dolphins will provide paper products, silverware and lemonade/tea/Gatorade. There are tables, a playground, and a lot of shade trees! There will be a meeting on April 18th, in Durango, immediately after the afternoon session. The WSL board is working on establishing a teleconference with the teams that will not be able to attend. Please have your meet dates and information available, or be able to confirm the already posted meet dates. Saturday, April 18th, the Durango Swim Club will be having a fundraising spaghetti dinner at the Durango Rec Center. In addition, there will be a silent auction with a wide variety of things to bid on. Included is a custom built bike frame and a sculpture by renowned artist Kevin McCarthy. Everyone attending the meet is invited to both.

Like the Western Slope Championships that Montrose hosted this past February, we will be posting the heat sheet on our website and on that of the WSL. Heat sheets should be printed before attending the meet if you’d like your own.

West Slope Swim Camp was created to allow many of the best swimmers in our league to have the ability to train for one week of the summer. Not only to begin the training necessary for a successful summer season, but it was intended to have a follow-up meeting with the group though out the season.

It was expanded after the first few years as a camp to give exposure to all athletes to long course training with an early season emphasis on fitness and technique. Distance has not been the primary focus but the name has stuck. Generally even the best swimmer falls apart by the middle of the week.

The camp is designed for swimmers 13 and over. They must be in good shape with a recommendation from a coach.

Dale graciously represented the Western Slope League at the Swimposium last weekend. Here are his notes from the meeting. As an aside, our own Steve Williams from Pagosa won Seasonal Coach of the Year, Susanna Fuerste-Fry won the Best Stroke & Turn Official, and Suzi King won the USA Swimming Outstanding Service Award.

The Marlins would like to propose a change in the start time of our meet on Saturday, November 1st. Due to the fact that Friday is Halloween and many children wish to trick or treat in their own neighborhoods, we are proposing to move our warmup start time to 10:00am. This would mean the morning session would begin at 11:00 or 11:30am. The afternoon session would be several hours later as well, and would probably run into the early evening, depending on numbers of swimmers. Please let us know if this would influence your decision to attend our meet. We will make the final decision once we get an idea of your preferences and the numbers of swimmers to expect. The Lorimers will be hosting a clinic on Sat Oct 25th for new officials and current official’s recert. Stroke & Turn in the AM & Starter, Deck Ref in the afternoon. We will meet at the Ouray School on 7th Ave starting at 8:30AM. The Lorimers would like to invite all attendees and their families to our home after the completion of the afternoon session for a bar-b-que & ice cream sundays. Please let us know how many to expect so we will have enough food. On Sunday the 26th, again at the Ouray School, we will be offering a Meet Managers clinic all day. This will be a hands-on-clinic in the schools computer lab. Anyone needing hotel accommodations should call the Ouray Comfort Inn 970-325-7203 and tell Betty you are with our clinic.

Athletes will have to nominate themselves. The position is for one female and one male athlete. Athletes will be elected by their peers with 2 votes per team, one for female and one for male athlete rep. Names will be posted Saturday morning of the WSL meet and teams can cast their ballots until 12:00 noon on Sunday.

Brian Pearson , Head Coach of Mesa State College Women’s Swimming and Diving, will teach a one-hour all-freestyle clinic and will stay for another hour to answer questions from swimmers, parents and coaches.

The Sopris Barracudas Swim Club, in Glenwood Springs, CO, is currently seeking a Head Coach to begin March 2008. The Club is run by a non-profit volunteer board. The team ranges from 90 swimmers in the summer season to approximately 35 swimmers in our winter program. The Head Coach should be able to train and supervise all levels of swimmers from novice to sectional qualifiers, and ages ranging from 5-18. Appropriate swimming credentials and knowledge of USS requirements for teams, swimmers and coaches is preferred. Salary is based on qualifications, experience, certification and program growth. The Craig Seasharks Swim Team is looking for a head coach. Our summer club team consists of approximately 40 to 50 swimmers ranging in age from 5 to 18 years old. The team is comprised of entry level swimmers through state and zone level swimmers. Responsibilities include conducting practices, which include both swimming and dry land training, scheduling, supervising an assistant coach, making meet entries, and assisting swimmers at meets throughout the Western Slope. Weekend travel is required.
